THE Taliban has rejected unconfirmed reports that key leader Mullah Omar has been killed in Pakistan.
“He is in Afghanistan safe and sound,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told news agency Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.
“We reject these baseless reports that Mullah Mohammad Omar has been killed.”
Omar was killed while making his way from the Pakistani city of Quetta to North Waziristan, a mountainous region, Pakistan’s news website Dawn.com said, citing Afghanistan’s TOLO-TV
A senior Pakistani security official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said he could not confirm the report but was “making queries.”
Shortly after the claims emerged, a Taliban spokesman told the Afghan Islamic Press news agency that Omar was still alive.
